Class of 2023:

Luz Reyes

Meet Luz Reyes. Luz was the 11th recipient of The ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship awarded in June 2023. Luz Reyes is an honorable mother, daughter, wife, sister, mother and law and a grandmother who is very loved by her entire family and friends. She has lived her life to the fullest, teaching her 3 daughters to live each day like it’s their last.

Her passions are cooking, dancing, and spending time with her daughters, son in law, husband, and her granddaughters! “She has always been the light of the house, which is obvious because of course her name in English translates to light (LUZ),” says her daughter.

In August of 2021, Luz was in a tragic car accident that resulted to the unfortunate loss of their little sister Monyka who was 20 years old. Her family misses her dearly. Luz or Luchys as she likes to be called had a traumatic brain injury. She was hospitalized and had a craniotomy performed on her skull. She suffered a traumatic brain injury on the right side of her brain leaving her with very low mobility on her left side.

Ever since the accident their family’s dedication is to work towards their mom’s healing. Her advice and teaching are so good that we apply everything she ever taught us to our daily life,” says her daughter. Something so simple as taking it one day at a time has helped them as a family with the huge new feeling of grief that they feel when they miss their little sister or their mom; how she used to be.

“Our life has completely changed but our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ grows everyday! We continue to stick together and we have met amazing people like Kel!” says her daughter.

They were told about the ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship and with the lack of insurance for their mom, they immediately applied. “We were thrilled to hear the news that the scholarship was granted to Luchys,” her daughter says. Ever since the therapies began at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation utilizing her scholarship; her posture, core strength, and leg strength has improved.

“We want to thank Kel and the ‘Kel Strong’ Foundation for everything he continues to do. May this seed that was planted in his heart never stop growing,” says Luz’s daughter.
