Class of 2020:

Sandra Mora

Meet Sandra Mora. Sandra was the 3rd recipient of The ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship awarded in December 2020. Sandra suffered a brain hemorrhage (stroke) on September 18, 2016. She is young mother of two beautiful daughters ages 13 and 5. When she suffered her brain injury, she fell down the stairs holding her 5 month old at the time. To save her, she took all the impact on herself while holding her baby, According to Sandra, I have never given up. Even though there has been a lot of frustration, but I have great family that helps me get through it.” Sandra applied for the ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship because she was not working cause of her injury and her dad was the only one helping her financially. At that time he had lost his job and Sandra didn't have a way to pay the co-pays. Thanks to our scholarship, she was able to pay for the co-pays and continue her therapy. The ‘Kel Strong’ Mabatah Foundation is happy that we were able to help her out and take the stress away of worrying about her $40 copay each time she came to speech therapy and instead now could just focus on her therapy and getting better. It was a big help to her and her family, reliving some funds that they didn’t have. Since receiving our help, “my speech is slowly improving, and I can say more words and eating a little more soft things than I used to,” says Sandra. Sandra used to work at New York Life Insurance Company as an analyst prior to her brain injury. However due to her condition, she can’t go back to her career. Her focus right now is on improving her speech so she can better communicate with her children, family, and friends. She also wants to be able to do a lot of activities with her girls and to be more independent so that she can do a lot with her kids like she used to before her injury. In addition to that, Sandra wants to pursue a new career and has a very good opportunity to join a cousin who wants Sandra to join her new jewelry business so she has been working towards that as well.
