Class of 2024:
Tyler Comeaux
Meet Tyler Comeaux. Tyler was the 14th recipient of The ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship awarded in August 2024. In the summer of 2023, Tyler was a recent high school graduate with plans of starting college with the goal of playing the sport of baseball, which he had grown up playing and excelling in. Then that summer, five days after committing to play Division 1 baseball at Houston Christian University, Tyler suffered a brain aneurysm from an avm lying dormant in his brain. This caused the left side of his body to be completely paralyzed and required him to immediately begin the rehab process.
After Tyler’s injury, he was in the ICU for 17 days, then later being transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann Inpatient RehabHospital for 4 weeks, before getting transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilation’s outpatient services, where he was at for a little over a year before his insurance stopped paying for his therapy.
Tyler’s occupational therapist at TIRR told him about the ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship, which he decided to apply for. After applying, Tyler ended up receiving the scholarship, which helped pay for another stint of his therapy before he ultimately graduated from the outpatient services.
During Tyler’s use of the ‘Kel Strong’ Scholarship, he made a tremendous advance on the function and ability of his affected hand which allowed him to be released from therapy all together. While Tyler is still working on weakness of the affected part of his body, “The scholarship that The ‘Kel Strong’ Foundation provided me allowed me to make substantial progress on my road to recovery,” says Tyler.
We wish Tyler the best in his recovery and we hope to see him back on that baseball field throwing strikes like he did prior to his injury!
